Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate futures profit and loss?

Long: (exit − entry) × point value × contracts. Two ES contracts from 5,450 to 5,475 make 25 × $50 × 2 = $2,500 before fees; for a short, reverse the price difference.

What does tick size mean in futures?

Tick size is the smallest quoted price movement allowed for a contract. An ES tick is 0.25 index points and is worth $12.50 per contract; tick value changes by contract, even when two contracts share the same tick size.

How do Micro E-mini contracts compare with standard contracts?

Micro contracts use a smaller multiplier. Micro E-mini S&P 500 (MES) is worth $5 per point compared with $50 per point for ES, so a 10-point move is $50 per MES contract or $500 per ES contract, before fees.

How does account risk affect futures position size?

The position-size mode divides your account risk amount by the planned loss per contract and rounds down to a whole contract. With a $50,000 account and 1% risk, the budget is $500. A 10-point ES stop is $500 per contract before costs, so that budget fits one contract.

Which futures contracts does the calculator support?

It includes 28 listed contracts across equity indices, energy, metals, Treasuries, currencies, agriculture, and crypto. Choose Custom to enter a contract’s tick size and tick value when it is not listed.

What is the difference between gross and net futures P&L?

Gross P&L is price movement before costs; net P&L subtracts round-trip fees entered in P&L mode. Broker and exchange fees vary by provider and contract. Position Size does not include fees.
