USD — Advance GDP q/q
What it means
US Advance GDP q/q is the Bureau of Economic Analysis’ first estimate of the annualized percentage change in real gross domestic product from the previous quarter. Real GDP measures inflation-adjusted production within the United States. “Annualized” means the one-quarter growth rate is compounded as if it continued for a full year; it is not the economy’s actual change over twelve months. The advance estimate arrives about one month after quarter-end and uses incomplete source data plus BEA assumptions.
Markets compare Actual with Forecast because a stronger surprise can lift expected interest rates and USD, while weakness can reduce them. The effect depends on inflation, labour conditions and prior positioning. Look beyond the headline to personal consumption, fixed investment, inventories, net exports and government spending. Inventories and trade can create a large headline contribution without equally strong underlying domestic demand, so “final sales to private domestic purchasers” is a useful cross-check. The advance estimate is routinely revised in the second and third estimates as more complete data arrive; BEA reports that revisions between vintages can be meaningful. Annual updates can revise several years. Source: U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).
