NZD — RBNZ Press Conference

What it means

The RBNZ Press Conference follows a quarterly Monetary Policy Statement and gives the Governor and senior officials an opportunity to explain the OCR decision, forecasts and risks. It is not a data release and has no Actual, Forecast or Previous value. The prepared opening remarks usually repeat the published assessment, while questions may clarify the committee’s assumptions, reaction function and confidence in the projected policy path.

Markets listen for explanations of inflation persistence, spare capacity, migration, wages, housing, the exchange rate and global shocks. NZD and local yields may move if an answer materially changes the probability of future OCR moves, but tone alone should not be treated as a mechanical signal. The Governor communicates a committee decision rather than a personal rate promise, and the OCR projection remains conditional. Compare remarks with the published Statement, media release and record of meeting; apparent contradictions may reflect different scenarios or time horizons. Use the full livestream or transcript where possible because brief headlines can omit qualifications. A reaction can also reflect position unwinding after the initial 2 p.m. decision rather than new information from the conference itself. Source: Reserve Bank of New Zealand.
