JPY — Tokyo Core CPI y/y
What it means
Tokyo Core CPI y/y is the annual change in consumer prices in the Ku-area of Tokyo excluding fresh food. Japan’s Statistics Bureau compiles it from a weighted basket of household goods and services and publishes it monthly, typically before the nationwide CPI for the same reference month. “Core” in the Japanese convention excludes fresh food because its prices are especially volatile; it does not necessarily exclude energy, unlike some international core measures.
The indicator is watched as an early signal of national inflation and of pressure relevant to Bank of Japan policy. Actual above Forecast can support JPY and Japanese yields if the surprise appears broad and persistent, but the reaction depends on wages, services prices, government subsidies and prior positioning. Examine the all-items rate and the measure excluding both fresh food and energy to understand composition. Year-on-year changes can shift because of base effects even when the latest monthly move is small. Tokyo’s consumption pattern is not identical to the whole country, so it is an informative proxy rather than a substitute for national CPI. Basket weights, quality adjustments and policy-driven utility charges can also affect comparisons. Source: Statistics Bureau of Japan, Consumer Price Index.
