JPY — Monetary Policy Statement

What it means

The Bank of Japan Monetary Policy Statement communicates the Policy Board’s decision after a Monetary Policy Meeting. It identifies the operating target for the short-term interest rate and may include decisions about Japanese government bond purchases or other market operations. It also summarizes the board’s assessment of economic activity, prices and risks and normally reports the vote. The release time can vary because it follows the end of the meeting.

Markets compare the decision and wording with consensus and with the previous statement. An unexpected rate increase, faster reduction in accommodation or firmer confidence in sustainable 2% inflation can lift Japanese yields and support JPY; easier policy or cautious guidance can have the opposite effect. When the current rate is expected, the outlook, vote, purchase plan and conditions for future moves may matter more than the headline. Do not treat operational changes and policy-rate guidance as interchangeable. The statement is concise and conditional, and translation or initial headlines can miss important qualifications. Read it with the quarterly Outlook Report when available and the Governor’s press conference. The Ministry of Finance, not the BOJ, is responsible for foreign-exchange intervention.
