JPY — BOJ Press Conference
What it means
The BOJ Press Conference is the Governor’s briefing after a Bank of Japan Monetary Policy Meeting. It explains the policy decision, the board’s economic assessment and the reasoning behind any change to interest rates, asset purchases or other operating details. It is not a numerical data release, so Actual, Forecast and Previous are not meaningful fields. The unscripted question-and-answer session can provide information that was not explicit in the policy statement.
Traders listen for how the Governor describes underlying inflation, wage growth, real interest rates, the exchange rate, financial conditions and the conditions for the next policy adjustment. A more confident path toward normalization can raise Japanese yields and support JPY, while emphasis on downside risks or patience can have the opposite effect. However, tone should not be reduced to a single “hawkish” or “dovish” headline: answers are conditional, translations can vary, and the Governor represents a multi-member Policy Board. Compare the full remarks with the statement and Outlook Report, and check what markets had priced before the event. Comments on currency volatility are not automatically a signal of Ministry of Finance intervention. Source: Bank of Japan.
