JPY — BOJ Policy Rate

What it means

The BOJ Policy Rate is the short-term interest-rate setting used by the Bank of Japan to guide monetary conditions. The Policy Board establishes a guideline for money-market operations, expressed through the desired level of the uncollateralized overnight call rate. The Bank implements that stance through its operations and the remuneration applied to financial institutions’ current-account balances at the BOJ.

Policy is decided at Monetary Policy Meetings by the Bank’s Policy Board. The decision statement records the vote and explains the operating guideline and other measures. Traders also examine the Bank’s assessment of inflation, wages and economic activity, its guidance on government-bond purchases and the Outlook for Economic Activity and Prices when released. The Governor’s press conference can materially change how the decision is interpreted.

Compare the decision and guidance with market pricing. A higher policy-rate path or a faster withdrawal of accommodation than expected can raise Japanese government bond yields and support JPY, particularly if it narrows expected interest-rate differentials with other countries. A more accommodative stance can weigh on the yen. Because the yen is widely used in funding and carry trades, changes in global yields and risk appetite can amplify or reverse the initial reaction.

Do not treat the headline rate as the entire policy package. Bond-purchase plans, inflation forecasts, wage developments, language about underlying inflation and the pace of future normalisation may matter more than an unchanged rate. An expected move can have limited impact, while a change in guidance can be market-moving.
