BOJ Core CPI y/y

What it means

BOJ Core CPI y/y measures annual consumer-price inflation in the Bank of Japan’s core measure, which excludes fresh food but retains energy. It differs from headline CPI and from other core measures that may exclude both fresh food and energy, so the exact definition matters. The release helps assess underlying price pressure, but one reading can be affected by energy, administered prices, subsidies and base effects. Compare it with headline CPI, wages, services inflation and BOJ forecasts, and focus on the trend rather than a single surprise. A stronger or weaker result can change expectations for inflation persistence, but it does not by itself announce a BOJ policy decision or determine JPY direction.
