GBP — Autumn Forecast Statement
What it means
The UK Autumn Forecast Statement is a major fiscal update delivered by the Chancellor and accompanied by an independent OBR Economic and fiscal outlook. Depending on the government’s timetable it may be branded an Autumn Statement or Autumn Budget, but its market function is similar: it updates tax, spending and borrowing policy and presents revised forecasts for the economy and public finances. It has no meaningful Actual-versus-Forecast data point; traders compare the announced policy package and OBR projections with prior plans and market expectations.
The most market-sensitive details are changes to the fiscal rules and headroom, public-sector borrowing, debt interest, tax receipts, departmental spending, investment and the expected gilt-financing requirement. GBP can respond to the implied growth and inflation impulse, while gilts can respond to credibility and expected supply. A package that supports demand may also change expectations for Bank of England policy, so the same announcement can have different effects across currencies, yields and equities. Headline “giveaways” or “savings” should not be read in isolation: timing, temporary measures, policy reversals and classification changes matter. OBR projections are conditional forecasts and are routinely revised as economic data, market rates and government policy change. Source: HM Treasury and the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).
