GBP — Annual Budget Release
What it means
The UK Annual Budget is the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s main fiscal-policy statement to Parliament. It sets out tax and spending decisions and is normally published alongside an independent Economic and fiscal outlook from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR). The event is not a conventional data release: there is no single Actual value to compare with Forecast or Previous. Markets instead assess the full package, including changes to borrowing, taxation, departmental spending, public investment, gilt issuance implications and the OBR’s projections for growth, inflation, unemployment and the public finances.
For GBP and UK government bonds, the key question is how the package changes the expected mix of fiscal and monetary policy. A larger-than-expected fiscal expansion may lift near-term growth and inflation expectations but can also raise projected borrowing and gilt supply; tighter policy may do the opposite. The reaction therefore depends on credibility, funding, timing and the economic backdrop, not simply whether headline spending rises or falls. OBR forecasts are estimates built on stated policy and assumptions, not promises, and can change materially at later fiscal events. Distinguish newly announced measures from previously announced or reclassified items, and read the detailed scorecard rather than relying on the Chancellor’s headline totals.
