EUR — Main Refinancing Rate

What it means

The Main Refinancing Rate is the interest rate applied to the European Central Bank’s main refinancing operations (MROs). These are regular liquidity-providing transactions in which eligible euro-area banks can borrow central-bank money, normally for one week, against eligible collateral. The rate is one of the ECB’s three key policy rates, alongside the deposit facility rate and the marginal lending facility rate.

The ECB Governing Council sets the key rates to maintain price stability in the euro area. Under the ECB’s operational framework, the deposit facility rate is especially important for steering short-term money-market rates, so the MRO rate should not be interpreted in isolation. Traders assess the full rate package, the policy statement, inflation and growth projections when released, the press conference and guidance on the future path of rates and the balance sheet. The ECB does not publish an individual member vote split with each decision.

Compare the announced rates and communication with market pricing. A higher MRO rate, a smaller-than-expected cut or more restrictive guidance can lift euro-area yields and support EUR. A lower rate or more accommodative message can weigh on yields and the euro. If the numerical decision is fully expected, changes in the inflation outlook, language about persistence, transmission or reinvestments can matter more than the rate itself.

The market response is not automatic. EUR may fall after a rate increase if the ECB signals that no further tightening is likely, or rise after a cut if the move was already priced and the outlook is less dovish than expected. Read the MRO rate together with the deposit facility rate, money-market conditions, sovereign yield spreads, inflation, wages, credit growth and economic activity across the euro area.
