EUR — German Prelim GDP q/q

What it means

German Prelim GDP q/q is the Federal Statistical Office's first estimate of the percentage change in Germany's price-adjusted Gross Domestic Product from the previous quarter. The headline quarter-on-quarter series is adjusted for price, seasonal and calendar effects. Destatis compiles quarterly national accounts from production, expenditure and income information, but the early estimate relies heavily on monthly and quarterly indicators available soon after quarter-end.

GDP measures domestic production, not German companies' worldwide sales or household welfare. Traders examine household consumption, government demand, investment, inventories and net exports when the fuller breakdown becomes available. Germany's industrial and export exposure can make trade, energy and manufacturing swings especially important.

Compare Actual with Forecast and Previous, including revisions. Stronger-than-expected broad growth can support EUR and euro-area yields if it improves the regional outlook or reduces ECB easing expectations. Weak or negative growth can do the opposite. A surprise driven by inventories, imports or temporary production changes may receive less weight.

The preliminary estimate is data-limited and subject to revision as complete source statistics and annual benchmarks arrive. Calendar adjustment, especially the number of working days, can create differences between q/q and y/y measures. Use the composition and multi-quarter trend rather than labelling the economy from one flash estimate.
