EUR — German Prelim CPI m/m

What it means

German Prelim CPI m/m is Destatis's first estimate of the percentage change in Germany's national Consumer Price Index from the previous month. The CPI tracks prices for a representative basket of goods and services purchased by private households, weighted by consumer expenditure. Destatis aggregates early results from the federal states and publishes the preliminary national figure before the final detailed release.

This event refers to Germany's national CPI unless explicitly labelled HICP. The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices uses EU-wide concepts and can differ because of coverage and weights. Month-over-month inflation is sensitive to seasonal patterns in travel, clothing, energy and administered prices, so the annual rate and detailed components provide important context.

Compare Actual with Forecast and Previous. A stronger-than-expected result can lift German and euro-area yields and support EUR if it signals broader inflation pressure and a firmer ECB path. A weaker print can have the opposite effect. Germany is the euro area's largest economy, but the ECB responds to euro-area inflation rather than mechanically to one national release.

Preliminary data may be revised when complete state and product information arrives. Tax changes, base effects and volatile energy prices can distort interpretation. Compare the national CPI with German HICP, services and the three- to six-month trend.
