CAD — Overnight Rate

What it means

The Overnight Rate is the Bank of Canada’s target for the interest rate at which major financial institutions lend one-day funds to one another. It is the Bank’s main monetary policy instrument and anchors very short-term Canadian money-market rates. The Bank supports the target through its operating framework and standing deposit and lending facilities, which form an interest-rate corridor around the target.

The Bank of Canada announces rate decisions on eight fixed dates each year. Its Governing Council reaches decisions by consensus rather than publishing an individual vote split. The announcement explains how inflation, demand, economic slack, wages, financial conditions and global developments affect the policy outlook. On Monetary Policy Report dates, updated forecasts and risk assessments provide additional context; a summary of deliberations is published later.

Compare the announced rate and communication with market pricing. A higher rate, a smaller-than-expected cut or more restrictive guidance can lift Canadian bond yields and support CAD. A lower rate or more accommodative message can have the opposite effect. A fully expected decision can still move markets if the growth and inflation outlook, estimate of excess supply, or language about future easing or tightening changes.

The reaction is not automatic. CAD is also strongly influenced by oil and other commodity prices, US economic developments and global risk sentiment. The currency may weaken after a rate increase if the Bank signals that further tightening is unlikely, or strengthen after a cut if an even larger move had been priced. Read the target together with the policy statement, Monetary Policy Report when available and subsequent summary of deliberations.
