CAD — BOC Rate Statement

What it means

The Bank of Canada Rate Statement announces the Governing Council's decision on the target for the overnight rate. That target is the interest rate at which major financial institutions lend one-day funds to each other and is the anchor for Canada's monetary-policy operating framework. The Bank normally announces decisions on eight fixed dates each year; a change generally takes effect the following business day. The target is not the prime rate, mortgage rate or the borrowing cost faced by every customer.

The statement explains how the Council views inflation, economic slack, demand, wages, financial conditions and global risks. Compare the new target with the market consensus and Previous, but also compare the wording with the prior statement. An unchanged rate can move markets if the assessment of inflation persistence, excess supply or future risks changes.

A higher-than-expected rate or a more inflation-focused message can lift Canadian yields and support CAD. A cut or stronger concern about weak demand can lower yields and weigh on the currency. The response is conditional on the interest-rate path already priced, oil and global risk moves, and whether a Monetary Policy Report and press conference add a different emphasis.

Governing Council reaches decisions by consensus and does not publish an individual vote split. Conditional guidance is not a promise, and commercial banks decide how policy changes pass through to client rates. Read the rate, statement, MPR when available and later Summary of Deliberations as one policy process.
