AUD — CPI y/y
What it means
Australia CPI y/y measures the percentage change in the Consumer Price Index compared with the same month one year earlier. The Australian Bureau of Statistics compiles the CPI from a weighted basket of goods and services acquired by metropolitan households. The annual headline uses index levels twelve months apart and captures the cumulative change in consumer prices over that period.
The CPI basket covers eleven broad groups, including housing, food, transport, health, recreation, education and insurance and financial services. Weights are updated to reflect household spending patterns. Headline inflation includes volatile items; trimmed-mean inflation is published separately as an analytical measure of underlying pressure. The annual rate is not an annualised version of the latest monthly change.
Compare Actual with Forecast and Previous, then examine the latest monthly movement and the contributions from major groups. A higher-than-expected annual rate can strengthen expectations that the Reserve Bank of Australia will maintain or increase policy restraint, which may lift yields and support AUD. A softer reading can have the opposite effect. The reaction is usually larger when broad and persistent categories confirm the headline.
Base effects matter: the annual rate can move because an unusually large rise or fall from a year earlier drops out of the comparison. Government rebates, tax changes, weather-sensitive food and energy prices can also distort the headline. The RBA seeks CPI inflation of 2–3% over time and considers the outlook, labour market and underlying inflation rather than one release alone.
