AUD — CPI m/m

What it means

Australia CPI m/m measures the percentage change in the Consumer Price Index from the previous month. The Australian Bureau of Statistics builds the CPI from prices for a representative basket of goods and services purchased by metropolitan households, grouped across areas such as housing, food, transport, health, recreation, education and insurance. Expenditure weights determine how strongly each category affects the total index.

The headline CPI index is published on an original, not-seasonally-adjusted basis. ABS also publishes seasonally adjusted analytical series to help assess short-term momentum. Users should therefore confirm which series is displayed in the calendar and avoid treating an analytical adjustment as the headline index. A monthly increase can be driven by a small number of volatile categories, administered prices or the timing of rebates, subsidies and seasonal sales.

Compare Actual with Forecast and Previous, then inspect the category contributions and the year-over-year rate. A stronger-than-expected result can raise expectations for a tighter Reserve Bank of Australia policy path, lifting Australian yields and supporting AUD. A softer result can have the opposite effect. The response depends on whether the surprise appears persistent, whether trimmed-mean inflation confirms it and what markets had already priced.

Monthly data provide timelier information than a quarterly average but can also be noisy. Review several months, distinguish price-level effects from underlying momentum and check any revisions or updated seasonal factors. The RBA targets CPI inflation of 2–3% over time; it does not mechanically react to a single monthly observation.
