Westpac Consumer Sentiment

What it means

Westpac Consumer Sentiment is a survey-based gauge of how New Zealand households view their finances and the economic outlook. It measures confidence, not actual retail sales, income or GDP. The index is useful because confidence can affect willingness to spend, save, borrow and make large purchases, yet sentiment often reacts quickly to fuel prices, housing, headlines and interest-rate changes. Where the index uses a neutral threshold, the level and movement around that threshold can help frame optimism or pessimism. Read it with household spending, labour-market data, inflation and consumer credit. A sharp shift can add context to domestic-demand and NZD expectations, but survey mood alone does not predict the next economic release.
