Japan BSI Manufacturing Index
What it means
Japan’s BSI Manufacturing Index is a business-survey balance that captures how manufacturers assess conditions or their outlook. It is not a physical production-volume index. The reading is derived from the balance between firms reporting improvement and those reporting deterioration, so the direction and change from the prior survey are often more informative than any single level. Responses can reflect orders, export demand, costs, capacity and confidence. Look at the survey horizon and related indicators such as PMI, industrial production and machinery orders. A stronger or weaker result can shape views on the manufacturing cycle, business investment and JPY, but survey sentiment is volatile and should not be treated as a standalone growth forecast.
