UK Current Account
What it means
The UK Current Account measures the country’s net transactions with the rest of the world over a quarter. It combines trade in goods and services with primary income, such as investment income, and secondary income, such as transfers. A deficit means the UK is spending or paying more abroad than it receives in those current flows; it does not by itself mean an immediate currency crisis, because it is financed through the financial account. Markets watch the size, persistence and revisions of the balance, along with what drove the change. A result can matter for GBP when it alters views on foreign funding needs or the external position, but trade, growth, interest-rate expectations and risk sentiment often dominate the immediate reaction.
