Australia Goods Trade Balance
What it means
Australia’s Goods Trade Balance measures the value of merchandise exports minus merchandise imports over the reporting period. A surplus means goods exports exceeded goods imports; a deficit means the reverse. It does not include services such as tourism and education, investment income or transfers, so it is not the current account. Commodity prices and shipments, especially major resource exports, can drive the result alongside import demand and exchange-rate effects. Read the headline with export and import breakdowns, price versus volume changes and revisions. Markets compare the result with forecast and the trend in external demand. A large surprise can affect the near-term narrative for national income and AUD, but should be interpreted with the broader external accounts and commodity backdrop.
